Lex Renteria
Lex Rentería is a queer Mexican filmmaker, born in Guadalajara, committed to telling authentic stories from the LGBTQ+ community. Through his work, he seeks to explore the complexities of queer identity and experience, using visual and narrative resources that reflect these realities. His debut short film Neon Purple premiered at the Guadalajara International Film Festival in the 'Made in Jalisco' section. This project, along with his second sho...rt film Agaves at Dawn, which was produced in just 48 hours for the Expresso Tequila Rally at the Tequila International Film Festival, demonstrates his ability to portray complex emotions on screen. Both short films are notable for their use of visual contrasts; in Neon Purple, Lex employs neon lights and dark backgrounds to create a dramatic interplay of lights and shadows, while in Agaves at Dawn, he adapts this aesthetic to a rural context, using warm and enveloping tones, with backlighting that enhances the vibrant colors of the landscape. Narratively, Lex Rentería challenges traditional linear structures, using non-linear approaches to gradually reveal the story. This technique allows him to deeply explore the complexities of his characters and the situations they face, constructing a narrative that unfolds uniquely in each project. Beyond his visual and narrative style, Lex Rentería is deeply committed to the authentic representation of the LGBTQ+ community in his work. Through his stories, he seeks to make visible the diverse experiences of the community, addressing themes of identity, resistance, and resilience. Lex believes that telling these stories is an act of resistance and is dedicated to amplifying the voices of those who have often been marginalized in traditional cinema. With his dedication to authenticity and representation, Lex Rentería continues to establish himself as an emerging voice in Mexican cinema. His focus on telling queer stories, along with his distinctive visual style, reflects his commitment to using cinema as a tool to make diversity visible and to celebrate it. With future projects in development, Lex remains dedicated to amplifying the voices of his community.
