On January 25, 1979, an oil well in Zsana, Hungary, caught fire after gas rushed into its shaft at a depth of 1,800 meters and ignited. Miners, soldiers, and firefighters worked together to quench the flames but were only able to do so on February 15. The incident garnered nationwide attention through coverage by the press.
